Schooling abroad

Schooling in the Nordic countries

  • The Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden and Norway – have entered into a mutual agreement that young people with permanent residence in another Nordic country enjoy the same rights to upper secondary education and training as citizens of this country.
  • If you have completed parts of your upper secondary education/training in another Nordic country, in principle your studies will be approved on the same terms as for pupils who move from one school to another within Norway. This applies to both general studies and vocational education programmes at the upper secondary level.
  • Info Norden is the information service of the Nordic Council of Ministers designed for Nordic citizens who move from one Nordic country to another. You can find information about moving, studying and working in the Nordic countries on norden.org/info.

Schooling in France

3-year upper secondary education at a French lycée

  • Norwegian pupils may apply for admission to a 3-year upper secondary course of study at a French lycée in Bayeux, Lyon or Rouen. This is an opportunity for those who wish to go to school abroad with the aim of achieving a French baccalauréat.
  • You can apply for admission while you are in the 10th grade or Vg1 in Norway. When you start in France, you should be over 16 but not older than 17 by the end of that calendar year. You are not required to have studied French previously, but this is an advantage.
  • You can get more information on the websites utdanningiverden.no.

Vg1 specialization in general studies in France

  • Through the Institut français Norwegian pupils who are in the 10th grade and who have had French in the lower secondary school can apply for a 1-year course at Fontenay-le-Comte and Angers.
  • This year can be approved as the basis for admission to Vg2 for the education programme for specialization in general studies in Norway. It is also possible to continue at the French school and take the Baccalauréat.
